The physical movement and transformation of a commodity into a final consumable product involves a lot of value chain players. These are producers, warehousing and logistics firms, freight forwarders, quality inspection agencies, processors, manufacturers, packaging firms and distributors.

As we move a physical commodity from a place of production to a place of demand, we require services of the quality inspection agency, who will pass on the mantle to a freight and logistics agency / individual. The commodity will then be delivered to the processor/manufacturer who will transform the commodity and package it into a consumable product that will require distribution, transportation to the distributor, who will finally sell the product to the final consumer.

This process cannot be achieved by one value chain player alone, resources must therefore be pooled from different value chain players to reduce the cost of the value chain process itself for the benefit of the value chain players as well as the final consumer. The interdependence in the value is our biggest success factor.

Commodity trading consists of buying raw materials from producers for delivery to manufacturers, processors or consumers. The process aims to buy at the lowest price from producers and to sell at the highest price to buyers through the optimisation of the logistic chain. It evolves in globalised and increasingly complex markets.

Tradable commodities fall into mostly four categories, metals, energy, livestock and agricultural. These commodities are in abundance in Africa and mostly are not transformed into finished products on the African soil, yet these commodities form an important part of millions of lives especially in remote parts of Africa. Basic economic principles of demand and supply typically drive these commodities markets, lower supply drives up demand, which equals higher prices, and vice versa. However, most producers from remote production areas in Africa especially, do not benefit from higher prices due to exploitation and other barriers within the value chain.
